Once upon a time， there was an old man who used to go to the beach to walk。 One day， he was walking along the beach when he saw a young man。

從前，有一位老人經常去海邊散步。有一天他正在散步時，看到了一個年輕人。

The young man was reaching down to the shore， picking up something and gently throwing it into the ocean。

年輕人在海灘上不斷俯下身，撿起什麼東西，並輕輕地扔到海里去。

As he got closer the old man called out and asked，“Good morning， Son！ What are you doing？”

當老人走近了，他大聲地問年輕人：“早上好啊，孩子。你在幹什麼啊？”

The young man paused， looked up and replied，“Throwing starfish into the ocean。 The sun is up， the tide is going out。 If I don’t throw them in， they will die。”

年輕人停下來，抬頭回答道：“把海星扔到海里去。太陽馬上升起來了，海潮就要退了。如果我不把他們扔進海里，他們會死掉的。”

The old man said， “But， young man， don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach， and starfish all along it？ You can’t possibly make a difference！”

老人說道：“不過，孩子，你可知道這裡有數千英里海灘，到處都佈滿了海星啊！你這樣做起不了什麼作用的！”

The young man smiled， picked another starfish， threw it into the ocean and said， “Now it made a difference for that one！”

年輕人笑了笑，又撿起了一隻海星把它扔進了海里，說道：“對於那隻海星來說，現在已經起作用了！”
