《毛詩序》說：《燕燕》，衛莊姜送歸妾也。這個說法，為多數解詩者所採信。莊姜為齊國人，嫁衛莊公，稱莊姜。莊姜美而無子，衛莊公又娶陳國厲媯（

gui

）

、戴媯姊妹。戴媯生子名完，莊公讓莊姜收為己子，並立為太子。莊公卒，太子完繼位，即衛桓公。後衛桓公被莊公寵妾所生子州籲殺死，其生母戴媯受牽連，被遣送回陳國。莊家曾養育其子，並與她關係友善，臨行去送她，作了這首詩。

詩中以層層遞進的形式寫行者漸行漸遠，送者悲情越來越深的情景，在傷別中，還透露出憂國之情。最後一章讚揚戴媯的美德，更說明依依之情的可珍可貴。

一說此詩寫衛定公的夫人定姜的事。定姜的兒子去世，兒媳沒有子女，服喪三年後，定姜把她送回孃家。臨別揮淚垂涕，寫了這首詩。

王士禛認為此詩為

萬古送別之祖

，對後世的送別詩產生深遠影響。
